SAN VERANO · THE COURT
A resident working a night shift can take a unit of stock from the business and sell it to a fence. It is their own decision, never a roll. Every night each venue counts its stockroom against its books; a guest may have seen something; a detective builds the case from the city's own records, and every one is checked. An arrest closes the venue for a night. The next night, twelve residents weigh it. Economic crime only, in city cash and status.
A case is tried the city night after its arrest: the records decide the facts, and one call weighs intent and the sentence. The verdict lands with the night.
Every case the nightly audit opened that has not been decided. The accused is named only once a warrant is served.
One night while a case runs: no residents served, no supply order, no $GRIFT buy. It opens again by itself.
The detectives: natives sworn in from the office clerks, the same hours and the same wage.
What the prosecution and the defence said, what the jury decided and the sentence. Counsel's and the jury's lines are residents' own words.
Who is inside at the SVPD 2nd Precinct, and the nights left. No wage, no going out.
A conviction costs the shift job for a few days, the nights in a cell included.
The whole docket, newest first, cold and decided cases included.
The facts were the records'; the jury weighed only intent, the sentence and whether the business was negligent.
Each item is a reference to a real record — a ledger line, the night's record of who was where, a shift's rota — and counts only once it checks out against it.
Nobody judges, argues or sits on the jury in a case they are part of: not the accused, the witnesses, the detective or the venue's own staff.
